As an IELTS teacher, I had the pleasure of working with a student who attended six classes each for writing, reading, listening, and speaking. Although she had some prior knowledge of English, she had never taken the IELTS test before.
Before our first class, I provided her with several PDFs containing 1,200 recurring IELTS words that she needed to know, along with synonyms and other lexical resources. The first class served as a basic introduction to each part of the test. For instance, during the speaking section, we explored the three parts of the speaking test, discussing the types of questions she might encounter. We did the same for the writing section, explaining the various types of Part 1 questions, such as bar graphs, maps, pie charts, and tables. For Part 2, we covered advantages and disadvantages questions, two-view essays, and problem-solution questions.
At the second round of classes, we immediately began with Part 1 of each section. For reading, we practiced different question types and techniques to find inferences and paraphrased words. In listening, we worked on reading the questions carefully and honing skills to listen for answers and clues. After each lesson, I assigned homework to reinforce what we had learned, and we reviewed mistakes to ensure understanding.
I taught the correct formulas and methods for answering each question type, and we practiced rigorously. By the third classes, we focused on IELTS Writing Part 2, Speaking Part 2, Listening Part 2, and Reading Part 2.
During the fourth round of classes, we concentrated on timing, covering Speaking Part 3, Reading Part 3, Listening Sections 3 and 4, and integrating Writing Parts 1 and 2. Throughout this process, I continually introduced new lexical resources and advanced C2 vocabulary to help her aim for a higher band score, all while ensuring she managed her timing effectively.
By the fifth lessons, we began practicing all parts together, tackling different question types to ensure she was well-prepared to answer any question she might face on the test.
In our final sixth class for each type, we conducted comprehensive tests and reviews on listening, reading, speaking, and writing. Additionally, I scheduled a special class to simulate the final IELTS test experience. Throughout the course, I assigned numerous practice tasks to ensure she continued to develop her skills at home.
This structured approach not only enhanced her knowledge and techniques but also built her confidence, thoroughly preparing her for the IELTS exam.
